Letter

The Romans wrote all their letters in a row without spaces. They had to chose which ones went together to make up each word.

From the Latin verb »lego, legere« (which means both »choose« and »read«) we get the English word »legible« – »capable of being read or deciphered, especially with ease, as writing or printing«.

Cherish spaces.

Dear Aunt Mabel,

It was so good to see you at the Apple Butter and Quilting Bee in Crockford on Sunday!

I am sitting on the floor surrounded by thirty cardboard boxes, each one of them half-packed. The truck is due tomorrow morning to move me to my new apartment.

Before I forget, my new address is Apt. 3B, Aqua Terra Terraces. The zip is the same as here and my phone number won't change.

Well, I did it. I sent John the letter. I felt terrible while I was writing it.

Now I feel free and ready to begin a new chapter in my life!

Letters are the marks and the sounds which make up words. There are twenty-six letters in the English alphabet. The ones typed above are the capital or the upper-case letters. The ones typed below are the small or lower-case letters.

A letter, on the other hand, can also be a piece of correspondence. This kind of letter contains some number of words. And each word is made up of one or more letters.

Which means a letter (singular) is made up of many letters!!!

When was the last time that you wrote a letter? Not an e-mail, but a letter written by hand and placed in an envelope, stamped and sealed and addressed with care?

When was the last time you received such a letter?

I keep many letters in an old box, it contains more memories than I care to remember. Both good and bad.

To catch sight of an envelope with its address written by a familiar hand still causes my heart to beat faster.

Such an envelope is a rare find among the circulars and other junk mail in my letter box.
